Building Vital Connections: The Iredell Public and School Library StudentAccess Program

The Iredell Public Library StudentAccess Program exemplifies the notion that libraries are spaces where innovative and exciting connections and collaborations are happening every day. This program represents a new and vibrant shared space between the Iredell County public library system and school libraries. In over two years, StudentAccess has led to the circulation of over 35,000 public library books to K-12 students. This number does not include transactions with digital resources such as databases, Overdrive, NC Kids Digital Library, etc.

The program is centered on four main tenets: 1) All Iredell-Statesville Schools students have automatic access to the public library resources through their student IDs; 2) A courier service delivers and picks up books at the school libraries; 3) Schools are assigned to a public library staff member for support; and, 4) There are no overdue fines.

Our presentation will describe the program, discuss lessons learned, and provide resources on how to establish such a partnership between public and school libraries.
