Following an explosive growth in publishing which has brought a sophisticated variety of stories and characters, graphic novels and comics are growing in popularity as library resources. This presentation will discuss how a highly-used graphic novel collection and a lively Graphic Novel Book Club were developed at an academic library. First, we will cover the details of selecting materials for the collection, how we catalog them, how they are displayed, and their use statistics. Then we will discuss how we created our Graphic Novel Book Club, which aims to cultivate a community of readers and facilitate critical discourse around a selection of diverse stories. Past selections have ranged from Roz Chast’s graphic memoir of caring for her elderly parents toward the end of their lives, Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant, to Jeff Lemire’s story about depressed superheroes trapped on a mysterious farm for ten years, Black Hammer. We will offer tips and suggested resources to help you develop similar programs and collections at your own library.
