So! You STILL Want to be a Library Director: Things They Don’t Teach You in Library School

Log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Feedback form is now closed.
“They didn’t teach me that in library school!” is a common refrain among new library directors, as some unexpected situation that seems straight out of Joseph Heller’s "Catch 22" befalls them in their early days on the job. Learn from three library directors with varying levels of experience what fresh hells await you that the academics of library science never conceived. From confusing laws and regulations to frustrating facility failures, from transitioning to your new role to operating in a governmental environment, from staff development to dealing with the public, find out how to steel yourself for the gale force winds of public library directorship. For assistant directors, branch managers, department heads, new directors, and those new to their career or library school students – anyone whose career path might lead to a public library directorship. Academic librarians welcome as well – many of the same characteristics apply to all types of libraries. A follow-up to the North Carolina Public Library Directors Association’s popular “So! You Want to be a Public Library Director…” 2017 preconference.
