Learning management systems (LMS) can be powerful tools for reaching students and library users at their point of need. This is true for universities, colleges, and school libraries providing information literacy instruction to students and for public libraries teaching free courses for their patrons. According to a recent survey sent out at UNC Greensboro, students rely on their LMS to find most of their information for school; therefore, library integration within this tool is critical for reaching both face-to-face and online students. Free LMS systems (such as Canvas Free for Teachers) can also be useful for adult learners, trainings, and workshops outside of university settings.
At both UNC Greensboro and UNC Charlotte, librarians are developing coordinated library access for all students through the Canvas learning management system. Their goals include reaching students where they work, creating awareness of library services and resources, defining a librarian role in courses, and better serving students.
This panel will focus on useful LMS tools for librarians, software and apps for integrating with an LMS, tips for introductory course design, and resources for creating modules within the LMS. During this session, there will be opportunities for interaction through discussion, questions/answers, and audience polling.
