Keeping Patrons First with the New RDA

Libraries are spaces to connect patrons with information, and Resource Description and Access (RDA) cataloging rules were designed specifically for that purpose. However, just as catalogers and non-catalogers alike have started to feel comfortable with RDA cataloging, a major change in the standard looms. Revisions set to go live in early 2020 will change how the rules are organized, several key vocabularies, and how we are expected to interact with the materials we catalog and the patrons who use them.

What does all this mean in the real world? This session will address the major changes we can expect and ways to work with (or against!) them. We will also focus on how to continue the good work RDA has done putting our patrons’ needs first as we catalog.

This session will be of use to catalogers and non-catalogers who wish to understand what changes may affect library catalogs in the coming years.
