Libraries are Spaces to Get Social and Build Community. Libraries need virtual spaces to interact with patrons, as many patrons do not physically visit the library any longer. Social media is critical for the ongoing success of the library and life-long learning of the community. It has the capacity to build closer relationships between libraries and their patrons, to increase access to the community, and to connect people with an increasing array of services and resources. This study utilizes a mixed-method approach to understand how public libraries of various sizes in North Carolina and across the United States curate their social media and what best practices they are using. Our guiding research questions are 1) What are the information needs of library patrons? 2) How are they currently interacting with the library through digital resources and services? 3) How are public libraries meeting these needs through social media? 4) What are the most common challenges in curating social media? 5) What are the best practices for social media curation?
