Online and distance education offer graduate students pursuing Library and Information Science degrees an opportunity to obtain their degree in a flexible and convenient manner. However, students pursuing these degrees may not feel as connected to the academic experience as their on-campus classmates. Intensive short term internships offer graduate students a hands on learning experience that reaches beyond the typical classroom experience. Through intensive internships such as the UNCG Alternative Spring Break, students are offered a unique opportunity to experience professional librarianship by shadowing librarians, engaging with library staff, performing practical tasks, and exploring the diverse professional roles available within librarianship to encourage graduate students to concentrate on the area of librarianship best suited to their skillset. These intensive internships can also enable libraries that do not have the necessary infrastructure to take on long-term internships but have short-term projects that would be useful for graduate students.
