As the digital landscape continues to expand and household technologies become more varied and complex, it is the library’s responsibility to provide more than just access to devices and resources, we must also equip patrons with the skills, knowledge and experience they need to use technology effectively and responsibly. The Harnett County Public Library’s “Technology Training Passport Program” was launched in April to expand patrons’ awareness of new and not-so-new technologies by coupling hands-on classes with an incentives program. Participants are issued a passport book and given a passport “stamp” for each technology class attended. As patrons accumulate stamps, they earn small prizes and certificates. Using this model, patrons are encouraged to explore various different technology applications, devices and concepts. HCPL has hosted six classes this past spring and five more classes are scheduled for the summer. Classes focus on a variety of topics from how to operate a mouse and keyboard, to how to use digital databases for genealogy research, to how to spot fake news online. This poster will illustrate how libraries can implement an incentives-based technology instruction program in their own institutions, including example lesson plans and materials, marketing strategies, and program evaluation methods using Project Outcome.
